Ed's 914 In The Making

This page is dedicated to my wife, Kali, my 18 month old son, Dylan (who loves the garage, tools and the 914!) and, to my Dad - Barron Villela. This one is for all of you!

I have a 1973 914. I've had it 10 years now. It has been collecting dust and rust for the past 4 years. The car has a bad inner longitudinal on the right side (See the pictures below), which I found out after an autocross when I noticed the door gap was a little tight.

During the rebuild - some of the planned *enhancements* include:

Factory steel flares, a set of Brad Mayeur repair pieces, a 911 front end, and 5 lug rear hubs, sway bars and springs, 5 point harness, GT brace kit, etc.....

The car will be running a modified 2.0L four for now, (but will have a six conversion in it's future!). My target date it to have it drivable by late spring / early summer (In time for Ed & John's Excellent Adventure!). And, oh yes, the car is Guard's Red.

I would like to thank Rich Johnson, Perry Kiehl and Brad Mayuer for all of their excellent advice and parts at fair prices. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me!

Rebuilding the Right Inner longitudinal.

I'm thinking this is NOT gonna be a Fun repair.

I'm thinking "Can JB Weld Really Fix this??"!!

Is all cut out, sandblasted and painted with POR15 silver.

Installation and rebuilding continues with some handmade panels.

New inner clamped on and manilla folder templates.

From manilla to 16ga panels. I made these.

Just before the Brad Mayuer piece is attached - my handmade panels installed and the Right side looking "OEM".

The famous Brad Mayuer piece installed.

And the GT Flares go on!!!

This is how you repair a rotted passenger compartment vent tube. A section of the side pillar needs to be removed. Carefully!!

GT bracing kit installed. Fender cut for rear GT flare. Note the roof pillar section has been replaced, welded and leaded.

Front GT flare aligned and clamped in place.

How big of a hole do you have to cut for the flare ??? Now that’s a Whole Big Hole !!

A front view of the wide flares, big fat tires and wheels.

And a rear view.
