Intel Demos P55C Pentium

Intel Corporation revealed the details behind its multimedia enabled processor, code-named "P55C Pentium," at the Intermedia show in San Francisco. Intelís MMX instruction set, the core of its P55C multimedia technology, will be incorporated throughout its product line over the next year and a half. Pentium Pro processors will feature MMX technology during 1997. Intel will also be developing upgrade processors for the current crop of Pentium chips that do not have the MMX instruction set. The first P55C Pentiums will initially ship later this year from selected vendors that have signed agreements for early access to the new technology. Advanced Micro Devices has licensed Intelís MMX instruction set for use in its processors. Intel courted the software developers with a program that sent its engineers to each company to convert their programs to Intelís MMX architecture.
